The Inevitable Smallprint
Copyright information for this archive website
May 2024
In the print issues of SQUALL, most had a line on the inside cover which said 'open copyright for non-profit-making use only'. This archive largely continues in the spirit of this; however it isn't always possible, so these are the copyright guidelines for this site...
Firstly, written material and images (photos and graphics) are to be treated separately. Also, a differentiation needs to be made between text and images submitted directly to SQUALL by its contributors or those who gave permission - which covers the vast majority of it - versus the occasional externally-sourced or appropriated image or text which was used for whatever reason. No copyright assertion is being made here about any content in this latter category.
Written Material
Creative Commons - which first appeared in 2001 - offer a range of publishing licenses which allow material to be shareable, but with specific provisos:
All written material by SQUALL and its contributors, or was submitted to SQUALL by its author or made available with permission - is re-published on this website under the Creative Commons CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike) license. This enables re-users to distribute, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for non-commercial purposes only, and also only so long as attribution is given to the original author. And if you re-edit, adapt, or build upon the material, these same CC provisos must go onto the resulting work.
If you have written material in this archive, but don't want it published under this CC license, or have a query, please email SQUALL (see below).
For the exact wording of this CC license see https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/
Images
Any image (photo or graphic) in SQUALL is the copyright property of its creator, or carries whatever copyright status they give it.
For images sourced externally - eg not by a regular SQUALL photographer or artist - they should come under 'fair-use': all the images on this site are blog-image resolution or less (1100 pixels wide or less), and many are of compromised quality due to being scanned from dot-screen printed images, and/or are black & white where the original was colour. This use shouldn't impact on the commercial value of a high-quality version of the image for its creator.
If your images are being used without your consent, please contact SQUALL to rectify this.
Or - if an image of yours is on this site, and you have a better version than the one we've got which you are happy to share, please get in touch.
